How to Prepare for Our Work Together

It’s my hope that our work together nourishes the human longing to understand who we are and why we’re here, and all the marketing we write in the process is just a bonus. That being said, there are things you can do to set yourself up for success in our process.

Start a daily practice.

To get the most out of our work together, create time for contemplation. The more time you spend digging into what emerges through our process, the more you’re going to learn and create. For example, it might happen that a blog idea will come up on a call that I encourage you to write as homework. If you already have the practice in place, it’s going to be much easier.

Begin to write.

  1. Write a list of the most highly impactful moments of your life. Now, write a personal story about each of them using this format (or any other format you like).

  2. Read this blog, and this blog and see if you can figure out your central question and some of the great themes of your life. We will do some work on this on our first call.

Preparing for our calls.

  1. Show up exactly as you are. Our sessions—although structured—are a safe space for you to be all that you are. If you are tired, overwhelmed, or grumpy—it’s all ok. There is no way for you to ever do a “bad job” with me.

  2. Embrace all that you are. In the personal growth world there tends to be negativity towards a lot of human idiosyncracies, but in the art world they are fully embraced as raw material of the process. In our work together, nothing that comes through you will ever be made to feel less-than. My role is to help you embrace all of who you are.

  3. Trust yourself; feel your truth. As we work together, I will “throw out” a lot of things I see or sense for you to “try on.” These reflections are not the truth. I tell you what I see, and you decide if it feels true. It’s a great opportunity for you to practice discernment in a completely safe space, as I will never question your truth.

What to expect when we work together:

Creative work by nature is a process that’s mostly out of our control, and forcing it into a structure can sometimes hinder it. This being said, here are the principles I follow:

  1. I’m committed to fostering a co-creative relationship of open communication, trust, and mutual respect for each of our processes and time.

  2. Every two weeks, there will be deliverables for both of us. My deliverables will be completed in the two weeks before our following call, sometimes it takes me a day, sometimes it takes me the full two weeks.

  3. How and when you choose to get your homework done is up to you. I don’t chase you for it. If you are embarking on this journey, it’s essential you build a robust and efficacious way of being to experience the full expression of your voice.
